HERTFORD
Hertford, the charming county town of Hertfordshire, England, is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of the county. It’s rich in history and boasts an amazing countryside scenery. The town offers easy access to London via two railways, allowing visitors to experience the best of both worlds. Visitors can admire the incredible architecture and a variety of shops, bars, and restaurants. There are great parks and open spaces to enjoy, as well as plenty of opportunity for nature walks and strolls along the riverside of the Lea that runs through the town. The area is rich in wildlife, including kingfishers and swans. The town often hosts festivals and events which attract many visitors. Monthly farmers markets are held every 3rd Sunday of the month at Tudor Square and the weekly Saturday market features a variety of stalls around the town centre. Hertford Museum and the town's operational traditional brewery, McMullen’s Brewery, are both worth visiting.
Take the time to explore Hertford Castle with its dungeon and gardens. The building referred to as Hertford Castle is actually the gatehouse, as the castle itself no longer stands. For 300 years it was a fortress whereafter it was the Royal Palace for the same period of time. James I of Scotland and the Templars were prisoners at the Castle and Queen Elizabeth I spend most of her childhood there. Events like movie screenings and live performances are often held on the Castle grounds. The playground at Hartham Common is a well-established, large open space in the centre of Hertford, near the Sainsbury’s. It comprises the wildlife-rich river corridors, cattle-grazed meadows, and a network of paths and various recreational facilities. There are two playgrounds over Hartham Common and a Skate Park. The park has an area designed for older children, as well as a playground for younger children which includes different swings, a roundabout, sandpit with water play and dinosaur bones, a Viking swing, and loads more. It also features two bird-nest towers, including slides, rope ladders, and a rope tunnel connecting the two together. There are plenty of benches and spaces to set up a picnic blanket for the whole family.
